The five-a-day campaign, launched in 2003, all those years ago made recommendations as to how much veg and fruit we should eat…the famous ‘five portions’.

Get the fruit and vegetable habit!

However, despite this clear guidance, many people still aren’t reaching this target, as outlined in the new Health and Food Supplements Information Service (HSIS) report State of the Nation: Dietary Trends in the UK – 20 Years On.‘ (Source: The Independent Newspaper June 2019.)

Nearly twenty years later, the study finds that 86% of people surveyed had no idea that they should be eating minimums of fruit and veg for their well-being. Amazing we thought.

‘Just over a quarter of adults aged 65 and over are reaching the goal, while only eight per cent of 11 to 18-year-olds are doing the same.’ (Source: The Independent Newspaper June 2019.)

‘In spite of the abundance of information on nutrition and health, UK diets have barely improved over the past two decades and there are worrying declines in intakes of vitamins and minerals across the board. Worse still, people seem to be ignoring public health advice,” said Dr Carrie Ruxton, dietitian and advisor to HSIS’. (Source: The Independent Newspaper June 2019.)

Our advice: Eat your five a day. Start good habits by seeking out fresh fruit and vegetables, the better to support yourself and your family or loved ones.

Gertrude Stein wrote ‘…a vegetable garden in the beginning looks so promising and then after all little by little it grows nothing but vegetables, nothing, nothing but vegetables’. (Source American author and poet – Gertrude Stein).
